Meet My Main Character - Ben: Roxanne's Ghost

Thank you, Diane M Denton, for tagging me to participate in the ‘Meet My Main Character' blog tour of a work in progress or soon to be published novel. I highly recommend Diane's published novel, A House Near Luccoli, and encourage you to read about her soon-to-be-released second novel, Beyond A House Near Luccoli when it is released. You can find more information on this book here: http://bardessdmdenton.wordpress.com/2014/05/05/meet-my-main-character-donatella-beyond-a-house-near-luccoli/

The first book in the Roxanne series, a paranormal romance, is nearly finished. I love the theme 'nothing is as it seems'. This thread runs through all my books. I also love things that go bump in the night and the unexplained. In short, the paranormal and creep drives my novels. Atmospherics like the weather (thunder and lightning), shadows cast by a fire in the grate against a wall, dancing candle flames play a strong part in all my writing. To have a look at my two pervious paranormal romances published by All Things That Matter Press, read the posts here on my blog or follow this link: https://www.amazon.com/author/maggietideswell

Here are my answers to the questions that are a part of this blog tour:

1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?

Dr. Benjamin Arnold is a completely fictitious person. He is a veterinary surgeon, a widower and father to a little girl called Amber. He looks a bit like this, only with bright green eyes. He is the typical outdoorsy man, nicely suntanned and athletically built. He has something about wearing a shirt and is just about always barefoot.

2) When and where is the story set?

Roxanne’s Ghost is set in modern day South Africa, just outside a tiny village named Wellington in the Western Cape region. It is about an hour's drive from Cape Town itself, in the heart of the winelands.

This picturesque little town nestles at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and is surrounded by vineyards. Weltevreden, where Ben lives, used to be a winery in the past but isn't anymore. It is situated off the Ceres road, about five km outside the town.

3) What should we know about him/her?

Ben is the ultimate reluctant lover. He is a bit confused about his feelings. Strictly a one woman man, he still thinks of himself as married man although he accepted his wife's death. He is not ready for a new relationship yet.

He dislikes hisw sisters-in-law intensely. They have a plan for him in the absence of his wife, but Ben will not allow them to arrange his future for him.

4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?

His in-laws. You see, his wife died tragically in a car accident, leaving him to care for his four year old autistic daughter on his own. His housekeeper, who had been the little girl’s main caregiver since she was born, was old, very old. Ben needed a nanny with special kind of qualifications to help him with his child. This is where Jessica James comes in. She is a highly qualified young woman, sent by he agency for an interview with Ben. She arrives at Weltevreden on, wait for it, Friday the 13th.

The attraction between Ben and Jessica is instant. But here comes the problem. Jess was hardly there, or Ben’s wife’s twin sister Millicent arrives and the other two sisters the following morning. And they are not happy with Jessica being there at all. Fancying themselves at some sort of dark witches, they put all sorts of spokes in Ben’s wheels. He tries to throw them out, but they just won’t budge. And they have a bad influence on Amber.

As Ben put it so eloquently, ‘Jessica, before you came, my life was in order. Now I will never be happy again, wanting what I can’t have.’

5) What is the personal goal of this character?

Ben accepts that he has to move away from the pain of losing his wife and find love again. His only condition, that his sisters-in-law are not part of his new life.

6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

Yes, the title is Roxanne’s Ghost. I don't think it will change.

7) When can we expect the book to be published?

If all goes well, I hope some time in 2015. I will post updates here on my blog about the progress.

I have tagged 5 other wonderful writes who will post about their main characters in a week.
